THERE IS no doubt about it, the corset is firmly back in fashion; from couture catwalks to High Street shops, this season’s look in dresses, suits and evening wear is a nipped-in waist with bosom and hips proudly on display. And for those not blessed with a natural hour glass silhouette, the quickest way to get that look is to suck in and lace up.

Maybe it’s a reaction against years of androgynous skimpy underwear, but now we are buying lingerie which really does something for our figures and emphasises our femininity. Let’s face it, singlets and briefs might be practical, but they are not very sexy; and with a corset, even the flattest chested can enjoy instant curves.

The 21st century corsetted woman may feel in control of her 19th century style figure and sexuality, in a way her Victorian counterparts never could, but watch out – you may be sending a stronger message than you realise.

Some scientists now believe that the most powerful human sexual trigger is the female waist. In experiments in the USA, men rated as most attractive (sexually and for childbearing) women of average weight with curves, which meant waists 24 to 28 inches with 36 inch hips or waists 27 to 31 inches with 40 inch hips.

Interestingly, this ratio is now recognised as a key indicator of health and is also linked to fertility, as oestrogen, the female sex hormone, concentrates fat on buttocks, while testosterone, the male hormone, builds fat around waist.

So by wearing a garment which emphasises your waist you are actually sending men a powerful subconscious message which says, “I’m young, female, healthy, and ready to mate with you and have your baby.” So use it carefully!

As far as exotic lingerie is concerned, quite possibly the most popular form of the clothing takes the shape of sexy corsets. Although in recent decades exotic lingerie has taken a back seat to boy short underwear, camisole tank tops and cozy sports bras, lately exotic lingerie has been making a comeback. Sexy corsets, in particular, seem to be seeing a huge rise in popularity.


Exotic lingerie, like corsets, has a fairly rich history, dating as far back as the 16th century (and possibly even further). Centuries ago, however, corsets hardly constituted exotic lingerie. Instead, women wore them every day as a way to enhance their silhouettes and increase their bust line to waist ratio. Instead of acting as exotic lingerie, corsets were used as functional underwear, cinching in the waist and holding up the breasts. In the time before bras, corsets were the next best things.


Instead, exotic lingerie of the past consisted of extravagant robes and detailed undergarments. The more elaborate and ornate, the more expensive and treasured the exotic lingerie was. It is kind of amazing when you think about it: not too long ago, lingerie was meant to be more functional than anything else. Today, few women wear lingerie at all.


Not too long ago, women wore garter belts with thigh high nylons underneath their dresses and skirts every single day. When nighttime rolled around, they would only go to sleep in pajama sets or full nightgowns. So many people wore all of this exotic lingerie so often, it could hardly be considered exotic at all!


All of these vintage style undergarments, from delicate robes to stockings and garter belts, are now considered by most people to be exotic lingerie. Suddenly, in the span of 50 years or so, it is no longer appropriate to wear silk stockings (particularly the ones with the lines running up the back) and garter belts to the office. As women moved away from secretarial pools and toward the boardrooms and big corner offices, the style of clothing (as well as the style of undergarments) evolved as well.


More and more, however, women are starting to rediscover exotic lingerie again. More and more online retailers are offering exotic lingerie that is a direct throwback to the days when there was nothing exotic about it. Sure, it may be a bit more expensive than traditional lingerie, but it is definitely worth the added cost.

If you want something out of the ordinary, a corset can be worn on its own with a skirt or even trousers for a stunning and unconventional look, and the back lacing will give the congregation and/or guests something to look at besides the back of head during the ceremony.

Planning Your Outfit

You need to choose your style well in advance, making sure that it works with your whole outfit. Before ordering a corset, get accurate measurements for your bust, waist and hips (your dressmaker, if you are using one, will help you, otherwise ask a friend). A corset will pull your waist in, but be realistic about how tightly you want to be pulled in all day and try it first.

Bear in mind your outline; it is probably best if you are wearing a corset underneath to go for a simple, undecorated style. If you fancy an Edwardian lacy boudoir number like either save it for the wedding night, or even better, buy two! (One for the wedding and one for afterwards).

If you have a bust larger than D cup, you should look at wearing a bra with an under bust style .

Make sure you try everything on together. Check the neckline and back of your outfit you don’t want underwear showing. Will you be wearing stockings or tights? If stockings, you’ll need suspenders (garters) to hold them up, and to decide how many check if the corset comes with suspenders and if you want more added.
